Pirate Crew Name Generator

By The PirateShipName editorial desk · Last updated August 2026

This generator produces names for groups rather than vessels: crews, fleets, armadas, brotherhoods and factions. Four styles are available and each run returns twenty names built from a pool written specifically for organisations.

A crew name has a different job from a ship name. It has to work as a collective noun that people apply to themselves, so it needs a plural or an institutional word on the end. The Crimson is a ship. The Crimson Company is a crew, and the single added word is what makes the difference.

What makes a crew name work

The tail word carries most of the meaning. Company, Brotherhood, Compact and Accord all suggest an organisation with rules, which fits a large or old crew. Corsairs, Marauders and Raiders suggest a fighting band. Fleet and Armada suggest scale, and using one of those for four people at a table is a joke whether you meant it or not.

Historical pirate companies genuinely were organisations. Crews signed articles, elected captains, and agreed compensation for lost limbs in writing. A name like The Iron Accord is closer to the real thing than most fantasy crew names, and it gives a game master something to hang plot on.

Matching the crew name to the ship name

These two names get read together constantly, so they should feel related without repeating. The Crimson Company sailing the Crimson Leviathan is too much. The Crimson Company sailing the Iron Talon works, because the connection is tonal rather than literal.

Our rule is that one of the two should be concrete and the other abstract. If the ship is a named object, the crew can be an institution. If the crew is a named object, the ship can be a feeling. When both are abstract, nobody can picture either.

Crews in games and communities

In tabletop play, the crew name is what the party writes at the top of the sheet, and it usually outlives at least one ship. Choose it for the group rather than for the current campaign arc, because the arc will change and the name will not.

For Discord servers, clans and gaming groups, the crew name is also a handle. Check it as a server name, a tag and a URL before you settle, since renaming a community costs you every link anyone has shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good pirate crew name?

A good crew name pairs a distinctive adjective with an organisational word: The Crimson Company, The Iron Accord, Blackwater Brotherhood. The tail word is what makes it read as a group rather than as a ship.

What should I name my pirate fleet?

Use a word that signals scale, such as Armada, Fleet or Coalition, and keep the modifier simple. The Iron Armada reads as many ships. Save Company and Brotherhood for a single crew, where the smaller word fits.

How do crew names and ship names work together?

Keep one concrete and one abstract. The Crimson Company sailing the Iron Talon works because the link is tonal. Repeating the same word in both, or making both abstract, leaves people unable to picture either one.
