Disclaimer

Last updated August 2026. This page sets out the limits of what this site can tell you. It is worth two minutes of your time if you are about to build something on a name you found here.

Names are not checked for availability

Everything on this site is a combination of ordinary words. We do not check any name against trademark registers, company registers, domain registrars, game clan systems or social handles, and we cannot tell you whether a name is free to use in your country or on any platform.

If you are naming a hobby crew, a tabletop vessel, a character in a story or a group of friends, this does not matter. If you intend to trade under a name, register a company, sell merchandise or run a commercial esports organisation, run a proper trademark search in your jurisdiction and take professional advice before you commit.

Some names come from history and fiction

A small number of curated entries reference real historical vessels or well known works of fiction, and those are described as such on the page where they appear. Queen Anne's Revenge was a real ship. The Black Pearl belongs to a film. Neither is ours to give away, and using either in a commercial project carries risks we cannot assess for you.

Historical content is researched, not authoritative

The guides on this site check their factual claims against published maritime histories and museum and archaeological records, and they say so plainly when the record is genuinely unsettled. That is a higher standard than most pirate content online meets, and it is still a website rather than a peer reviewed source.

For academic work, coursework or anything that will be cited, go to the underlying histories and archaeological reports rather than to this page. If you find an error here, the contact page is the fastest way to get it fixed.

The describe your crew mode

That feature sends your description to a third party language model and returns suggestions. It may be unavailable, rate limited, or produce results you do not like, and the suggestions are not reviewed by a person before you see them. The ordinary roll names mode does not depend on it and works regardless.

No professional advice

Nothing here is legal advice, business advice or branding advice. The naming guides describe what tends to work based on how names behave in games, at tables and in historical record. They are opinions with reasons attached, not a professional service.

Rules set by others take precedence

Game publishers, league administrators, tournament organisers, campus programmes and platform moderators all apply their own content rules. A name that is perfectly fine here may be rejected or changed by them, and their decision stands. We have kept everything on this site clean enough to be read aloud at a public event, which reduces the risk but does not remove it.

Advertising

This site is supported by advertising. Advertisers have no input into what is written, which names appear, or how history is described on any page. There are no affiliate links here and nothing is sold. Third party ad vendors may use cookies, which the cookie policy explains.

Where a page points to an outside source, we do not control that site and are not responsible for its content, its accuracy or how it handles your data.
